Ultimatum

Ultimatum XLS
- The Ultimatum XLS is a stand mounting loudspeaker of compact proportions, delivering the bass weight, scale and dynamics of a significantly sized floorstander. The mid/bass drivers in the XLS are mounted isobarically which when aligned correctly, as in the XLS, gives deep clean bass delivery. Combining this authority with the superb sounding Sonomex domed XL high-frequency unit is the art of the Ultimatums.
- Of course, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. Loudspeaker design is an art form as much as a science: combining drive units, cabinets, materials all together to produce a result that far exceeds the sum of its parts is unusual and worth a serious listen. Something that takes that and sprinkles in the magic of delivering the inner soul of the music is definitely worth a serious longer listen.
- The XLS cabinet is constructed from slow-growing birch ply chosen, as it is consistent and has the best resonance behaviour. The front baffle is from precision routed controlled density fibreboard coupled to the front of the cabinet by means of a polyethylene membrane. This makes an extremely inert platform for the mid/bass and high frequency drivers.
- The main Mid/Bass driver is a special version of the Neat 168mm driver with an aluminium phase plug to aid dispersion and reduce dynamic compression.
- A sealed sub-volume contains the main HF drive unit a modified SEAS XL SONOMEX domed XL unit with additional damping and support.
- A separate sub-volume contains two EMIT type supertweeter drive units. Those used in the Ultimatum series extend to 40kHz fire upwards and operate quietly. Their output, though inaudible to the human ear, affects the content within the audible frequency range and lends an open, airy quality to the presentation.
- The crossover is a minimalist four-element type (plus damping & attenuating resistors) employing precise-tolerance, low-loss air-cored inductors and high tolerance polypropylene film & foil capacitors. The speaker exploits predominantly first-order crossover slopes and mechanical roll-offs for a natural, uninhibited performance.

Ultimatum Xli
- The Ultimatum XLi is a new floor standing loudspeaker of compact proportions, It is engineered to deliver greater performance than the Ultimatum XLS by using a floor standing cabinet to deliver separate volumes for mass loading and crossover isolation.
- The mid/bass drivers in the XLi are mounted isobarically which when aligned correctly, as in the XLi, gives deep clean bass delivery. Combining this authority with the superb sounding Sonomex domed XL high-frequency unit is the art of the Ultimatums. A separate sub-volume contains two EMIT type supertweeter drive units. Those used in the Ultimatum series extend to 40kHz fire upwards and operate quietly. Their output, though inaudible to the human ear, affects the content within the audible frequency range and lends an open, airy quality to the presentation.
- The lower part of the XLi cabinet is designed to allow it to be mass loaded for extra stability and to ensure the centre of gravity is ideally placed.
- The XLi cabinet is constructed from slow-growing birch ply chosen as it is extremely consistent and has the ideal resonance behaviour. The front baffle is from precision routed controlled-density fibreboard coupled to the front of the cabinet by means of a polyethylene membrane. This makes an extremely inert platform for the mid/bass and high frequency drivers. The lower cabinet areas are also extensively braced to ensure that they are acoustically quiet.
- The crossover is a minimalist four-element type (plus damping & attenuating resistors) employing precise-tolerance, low-loss air-cored inductors and high tolerance polypropylene film & foil capacitors. The speaker exploits predominantly first-order crossover slopes and mechanical roll-offs for a natural, uninhibited performance. The crossover enjoys the isolation of a separate and isolated cabinet section below the bass driver cabinet. The benefit this isolation brings is substantial.

Ultimatum Xls
- The ULTIMATUM XL5 loudspeaker adheres to the very same principles that mark out the whole ULTIMATUM project as such an outstanding achievement. The ultra-rigid birch-plywood enclosure, unique baffle-decoupling technology, the dual 'isobaric' bass loading and use of twin EMIT ribbon-type super-tweeters are again employed to provide an enthralling listening experience.
- The XL5 is a multi-chamber, multi-driver enclosure constructed from Birch Plywood. It is, essentially, a two-way design, using Neat's 168mm main drivers (re-designed to meet the requirements of the ULTIMATUM range), an 'inverted' titanium-dome tweeter, plus two EMIT ribbon-type super-tweeters.
- The visible main drive unit handles bass and midrange and is isobarically loaded by similar drive units located inside the cabinet. The main tweeter is mounted above it, within a sculpted sub-baffle designed to minimise unwanted diffraction effects. The treble output is augmented by the two upward-firing EMIT super-tweeters mounted atop the enclosure.
- Another ULTIMATUM feature is the use of decoupled baffles. The driver-mounting baffles (front & top) are fixed to the main structure via a polyethylene membrane. The total baffle is a 45mm thick 'sandwich' of birch plywood, polyethylene and MDF. This provides a rigid non-resonant platform, which is ideal for optimal performance of the drive units.
- The crossover is a minimalist 3 element type (plus damping & attenuating resistors) employing precisely toleranced, low loss air-cored inductors and Neat's newly-developed polypropylene film & foil capacitors. The speaker exploits predominantly first-order crossover slopes and mechanical roll-offs for a natural, uninhibited performance.

Ultimatum Xl6
- The ULTIMATUM XL6 is a multi-chamber, multi-facet loudspeaker system incorporating six drive units per enclosure. The visible drive units are mounted on sub-baffles, attached to the main enclosure via a polyethylene damping membrane.
- The ULTIMATUM XL6 loudspeaker is floorstanding design which adheres to all the principles that have marked out the ULTIMATUM project and given it such enduring success. The ultra-rigid birch-plywood enclosure, innovative baffle-decoupling technology, isobaric bass loading and use of twin EMIT ribbon-type super-tweeters are employed here to deliver the ULTIMATUM promise of a lifetime of musical enjoyment.
- The enclosure comprises five discrete internal volumes each optimised for purpose. The Bass and Mid/Bass volumes are large to suit the low frequency tuning while the HF cabinet is small to increase rigidity and to stop back pressure from the Mid/Bass driver adversely affecting the rear chamber of the tweeter. The two EMIT supertweeters are similarly isolated.
- The main structure is damped 18mm Birch Plywood sourced from slow-growing forests. The drive unit baffles are constructed from a 45mm thick sandwich of Birch Plywood, polyethylene damping membrane and MDF. This provides a rigid non-resonant platform, which is ideal for optimal performance of the drive units.
- The two hidden isobarically loaded Neat 168mm bass drivers are flux optimised for purpose and use dustcaps for rigidity.
- The main Mid/Bass driver is a special version of the Neat 168mm driver with an aluminium phase plug to aid dispersion and reduce dynamic compression. Its enclosure is loaded by a low Q reflex tuning.
- A sealed sub-volume contains the main HF drive unit a modified SEAS XL SONOMEX domed XL unit with additional damping and support.
- A separate sub-volume contains two EMIT type supertweeter drive units. These fires upwards operate quietly and add a sense of space and realism to the performance.
- Two bass-only drive units are located at the bottom of the cabinet, in isobaric configuration, with one unit on the bottom panel facing downward. Acting as a passive subwoofer, these units are linked together and both receive the same signal, in phase. There is a sealed volume in between the two units, and the main enclosure is reflex-tuned.
- The crossover is a minimalist five element type (plus damping & attenuating resistors) employing precise-tolerance, low-loss air-cored inductors and high tolerance polypropylene film & foil capacitors. The speaker exploits predominantly first-order crossover slopes and mechanical roll-offs for a natural, uninhibited performance.

Ultimatum Xl9
- The ULTIMATUM XL9 loudspeaker has been designed purely for making music. It has evolved by virtue of Neat's approach; allowing music to determine the technology, rather than the other way around. This loudspeaker is the culmination of twenty years of expertise from the Neat Acoustics design team, working here without financial or creative inhibition.
- The XL9 is a complex, yet simply-conceived design incorporating a multi-chamber, multi-driver enclosure constructed from Birch Plywood. It is, essentially, a 2.5 way design, using six of Neat's 168mm main drivers (two of which have been re-designed to meet the exacting requirements of the ULTIMATUM range), a Focal 'inverted' titanium-dome tweeter, plus two super-tweeters.
- Several distinguishing features combine to make the ULTIMATUM a very special loudspeaker. There are seven discrete internal cavities, with five of the drive units facing forward in an extended D'Appolito array.
- The top and bottom drive units handle low-bass. The 'inner' pair handling bass and midrange. The main tweeter is in the centre, and is augmented by the two upward-firing EMIT super-tweeters.
- Uniquely, two separate compound (iso-baric) chambers are employed for the low-bass sections, giving superb pitch articulation and control.
- Three years of development have been spent on solving the problem of deleterious vibrational effects and the driver-mounting baffles (front & top) are decoupled from the main structure via a polyethylene membrane. The total baffle is a 45mm thick 'sandwich' of Birch Plywood, Polyethylene and MDF. This provides a rigid non-resonant platform, which is ideal for optimal performance of the drive units.
